Angaraag Mahanta is also known as Papon. He is a folk singer and grew up hearing folk songs from his parents. He is a renowned singer, composer and record producer.
Papon is born and brought up in Assam. His parents, Khagen Mahanta and Archana Mahanta, are also folk singer from Assam. Most of the days of his childhood have been spent in Assam. Apart from Assamese songs he have sung Bengali and Hindi songs also. He was trained in Indian classical music from his childhood including devotional (Borgeet) and folk songs. He has a firm grip over khol, table, guitar and harmonium. His music is based on ambient electronic, acoustic folk and new trend of Indian classical music. He has many solo albums in Assamese, bollywood songs and Bengali songs also.
Recently he married Shweta Mishra Mahanta and is leading a happy life in Mumbai with a son Puhor and daughter Parijaat. He received the Prag Cine Awards in 2012 as best male singer for the title songs in Assamese movie Raamdhenu. He has got the Bhupen Hazarika Award for best male singer category on 27 April 2012 and GIMA Award for Best Pop Album of the Year for his debut Hindi Album in the same year.
