Madhushree (born as Sujata Bhattacharya) is an Indian singer, who sings in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada films. A familiar voice in A. R. Rahman’s compositions, Madhushree hails from a musically inclined family, having previously been trained in classical music. Wanting to be a classical singer, Madhushree joined the Rabindra Bharati University and completed her masters.

Early life
Madhushree was originally born as Sujata Bhattacharya in a Bengali Brahmin family in Kolkata to Amarendranath and Parbati Bhattacharya, who were her initial teachers. She was taught classical music by Saneetacharya Pt. Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, a noted exponent of the Bishnupur Gharana and excelled in Thumri and Khayal. Later she started working for the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, through which she was deputed to teach classical music in Surinam.

Career
On returning to India, she met noted singer Kumar Sanu in Kolkata. On his recommendation, she then made her playback singing debut through Rajesh Roshan’s Moksha. She has then gone on to sing songs in films like Yuva, Aayitha Ezhuthu, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Anbe Aaruyire and Kuch Naa Kaho, and her most recent albums include A.R. Rahman’s Guru, and Rang De Basanti, Srikanth Deva’s Aalwar, Yuvan Shankar Raja’s Deepavali and Sarvam and Harris Jayaraj’s Unnale Unnale. Her song Vaaji Vaaji in A.R.Rahman’s Sivaji was well received.

She sang 3 songs in A.R.Rahman’s Tehzeeb, for which she has been credited as Sujata Bhattacharya. Though these songs did not become popular, they are considered by critics, to be among the best songs sung by her. But the song she is known for most is “Kabhi Neem Neem” from Yuva (2004). She also sung a song ‘In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein’ from the movie Jodhaa Akbar, music directed by A. R. Rahman.

Originally hailing from a Bengali background, Madhushree sang Tamil and Telegu for many South Indian composers. Her voice became an instant hit, especially under the discography of A. R. Rahman. Finally, Madhushree learned Tamil on her own wits to grasp a better understanding of her work and passion of singing, but still, her diction in Tamil is not perfect, according to critics. Currently married to engineer and music director Robby Badal, Madhushree will next be seen singing for Karthik Raja’s Mukhbir.

The rest of the songs do take more than one listen to get into, but are also enjoyable.”
